Use Farino AI to understand a PDF
Farino AI helps you understand a PDF: ask about the document, create a summary, translate text and explain terms. The AI panel opens beside the document, so you can check each answer against the original page.
Open the AI panel
- Open the PDF you want to understand.
- Click the AI tab on the ribbon.
- Choose a command: AI PDF Assistant, Chat with PDF, AI PDF Summarizer or AI Translate.
The Farino AI panel opens on the right. The document resizes so it stays visible beside the panel.
Get to know the panel
From top to bottom:
| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
| Credit balance | Credits you can use. Click the refresh icon to update it. A Buy credits link appears when the balance is low. |
| Assistant, Chat, Summarize, Translate | The four AI tasks. Choose the task before you write your message. |
| Try asking | Suggested questions. Click one to fill the message box, then edit it. Choosing a suggestion does not send anything. |
| Pages | Which pages are sent: This page, All pages or a Page range such as 1-3, 5. |
| Message box | Your question or instruction. Press Ctrl+Enter to send. |
| Send | Sends the request. When the credit estimate is large, the button changes to Send · up to N credits so you can confirm. |
If you belong to a team with shared credits, a Personal or Team credit source appears next to the balance.
Ask about a PDF
- Click Chat in the panel.
- Choose the pages under Pages. For a short document, choose All pages.
- Type your question, or click a suggestion under Try asking.
- The first time, tick the consent to send the selected page text to Farino AI.
- Click Send.
While the request runs, the status shows the elapsed time. The answer appears in the conversation with the credits used and the AI provider name.
Check page references
Answers usually include references such as p. 3. Click a reference to jump to that page in the document. Always check important numbers, names and dates against the original PDF.
Summarize pages
- Click Summarize.
- Choose the pages to summarize.
- Click a suggestion such as Executive summary or Page-by-page summary, or type what the summary should focus on.
- Click Send.
Translate text
- Click Translate.
- Choose a language under Translate to. Sixty languages are available.
- Choose the pages, then click Send. The message is optional, for example to keep certain terms.
The translation appears in the panel as text. The original PDF layout does not change. Click Copy on the answer to copy the result.
How credits work
Each request uses credits based on the amount of text processed. Before sending, Farino AI calculates the maximum credits for that request.
- The first request for a provider asks you to review its name and the credit ceiling.
- After that, small requests are sent straight away unless you enable Always confirm credits.
- When the maximum is larger, the button changes to Send · up to N credits. Click again to send.
- Only actual usage is charged. The rest of the reservation is released automatically.
- Failed requests do not use credits.
To confirm credits every time, open the ⋯ menu in the panel header and tick Always confirm credits before sending.
Buy credits
Buy credits in the customer portal under AI Credits. Each pack is valid from payment confirmation and does not renew automatically. See typical usage per pack on the AI & Credits page.
Conversation history
Conversations and message drafts save automatically on your computer, per PDF and per account. They come back when you open the same PDF again.
- Save history as text in the ⋯ menu exports the conversation to a .txt file.
- Clear chat deletes the conversation and draft for this PDF.
Document privacy
- The page text you select and your message go to the Farino server, then to the AI provider shown in the panel. Providers may process the text outside Indonesia.
- Provider API keys stay on the Farino server, never in the app.
- PDF content and questions are not stored in audit logs. Answers are kept encrypted for up to 24 hours for connection recovery.
- Do not send confidential documents if your organization's policy forbids it. All other PDF tools keep working offline.
See the Privacy Policy for details.
Troubleshooting
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| No text was found on these pages | The pages are scanned images. Run OCR first; see Recognize text in scanned PDFs. |
| Too much text for one request | Choose a smaller Page range. The message tells you which pages still fit. |
| Not enough credits | Click Buy credits, or choose another credit source if you belong to a team. |
| Connection interrupted | Click Check response before sending again, so the same request is not sent twice. |
| The AI provider did not respond | No credits were used. Try again shortly. |
