Accessibility and local AI tools

Applies to Farino PDF 1.62.6 and later · Updated

The Accessibility tab collects tools that make documents easier to read, hear, translate and summarize. Everything on this tab runs on your computer. No document is sent to a server and no API key is needed.

Requires Enterprise edition or higher

Read Aloud, Read Mode, Zoom, Summarize PDFs and Word Count are free. Searchable Layer and Preflight need Pro. Translate and Local Text Analysis need Enterprise. See pricing.

Read a PDF aloud

  1. Open the PDF and select Accessibility › Read Aloud.
  2. The Read Aloud panel opens with Read PDF aloud offline selected under Operation. The active PDF is listed under Documents.
  3. Click Process locally. Reading starts from the beginning of the document.
  4. Click Stop Read Aloud to stop.

Read Aloud uses the voices installed in Windows. It prefers an Indonesian voice when one is installed, otherwise it uses another local voice. If no local voice is installed, the panel asks you to install a Windows voice package. You can add voices in Windows Settings under Time & language › Speech.

Read Mode and zoom

Accessibility › Read Mode hides the ribbon so the document uses more of the screen. To return, click Exit Read Mode in the title bar or press Ctrl+Shift+H again.

Accessibility › Zoom offers the same commands as the status bar:

CommandShortcut
Zoom InCtrl++
Zoom OutCtrl+-
Fit WidthCtrl+2
Fit PageCtrl+0
Actual SizeCtrl+1
Fit Contentnone

Fit Content zooms to the text and images on the page and ignores empty margins.

Check accessibility and export tagged text

Click Options in the status bar and open the Accessibility section:

  • Audit document shows whether the PDF has tags, marked content, a language and a title.
  • Text language sets the language for the tagged export: English or Bahasa Indonesia.
  • Export tagged text PDF creates a new, tagged PDF that contains the document text in reading order. Use it for screen readers. Pages without text must be recognized with OCR first.

Translate English and Indonesian offline

Translate converts the document text between English and Indonesian with language models that are installed with Farino PDF.

  1. Open the PDF and select Accessibility › Translate. The Translate panel opens. It shows "Ready: English → Indonesian, Indonesian → English" when both models are available.
  2. Under Direction, choose English → Indonesian or Indonesian → English.
  3. Optional: open Glossary & protected text. Enter your own terms, one per line, as source = translation. You can also list names that must stay unchanged, and keep numbers and document identifiers unchanged. The glossary is saved separately for each direction.
  4. Click Translate Document Text.
  5. Review the result in the panel, grouped by page. Then click Copy, Save TXT, Save Word or Save PDF.

The translation runs in a background worker inside Farino PDF on your computer. The first run in each direction loads the model and shows "Preparing local translation…". After that the panel counts the translated parts. Translation uses the CPU, so a long document can take several minutes. Click Cancel translation to stop. Your PDF is not changed.

The exports contain editable translated text in reading order, with paragraph and page breaks. The original PDF layout and images are not reproduced. If the panel reports that translation is not installed, repair the Farino PDF installation.

Summarize a document locally

Accessibility › Local Text Analysis opens a panel with two tabs.

Summary picks the most informative sentences from the document, such as figures, dates and terms, with their page number. Use the Summary length slider to choose how many sentences to show. Click a page reference to jump to that page. Copy and Save .txt export the summary.

Rename suggests a file name based on the document's opening title line, followed by today's date. Edit the Suggested filename if needed, then click Open with new name to open a renamed copy.

Summarize several PDFs at once

  1. Select Accessibility › Summarize PDFs. The active PDF is selected under Documents.
  2. To add more files, click Choose Files and select all the PDFs you need. The total size can be up to 50 MB.
  3. Click Process locally.
  4. The key insights are listed per document with page references. Click Copy insights or Save .txt.

Count words

Select Accessibility › Word Count. The panel shows the number of pages, words and characters (excluding spaces) of the active PDF. Counts use the text layer, so scanned pages need OCR first.

Check a document before sharing

Accessibility › Preflight checks for blank pages, low-resolution images, large files, missing fonts and visible metadata. See Fill and create PDF forms for the full list of checks.
