Merge and split PDFs
This article shows how to combine several PDFs into one, split one PDF into several files, and save selected pages as a new PDF. Merge PDF and Split PDF are available in the free edition.
Merge PDFs
You can start from the Merge PDF card on the start screen, or from a document that is already open.
- Open the first PDF, then click Convert › Combine Files. The Merge PDF panel opens on the right with the active PDF as the first file.
- Click Add more PDFs and choose one or more other PDFs. Each file can be up to 500 MB.
- Drag the files in the list to set their order. Click × next to a file to remove it.
- If you want new continuous page numbers, select Renumber pages and choose a format: 1 / 10, 1, or Page 1 of 10.
- Click Merge. The button is available when the list has at least two files.
The result, merged.pdf, opens in a new tab. The original files do not change. Save the result with File › Save As.
Split a PDF
- Open a PDF, then click Tools › Split › Split Document. The Split PDF panel opens on the right.
- Choose how to split at the top of the panel.
- Set the options for that method, then click Split & Download ZIP.
- Choose the folder and ZIP file name in the Windows Save dialog.
Split methods:
| Mode | Result |
|---|---|
| By range | Each range in Page ranges becomes one PDF. Separate ranges with commas, for example 1-3, 5, 7-9. |
| Every page | Each page becomes a one-page PDF. |
| Every N pages | The document is cut into consecutive blocks of Pages per file. |
| By keyword | A new PDF starts at every page that contains the word in Split when a page contains, such as INVOICE. |
| By blank page | Blank pages act as separators and are removed. Each block between them becomes one PDF. |
All results are collected in one ZIP file with a name such as Quotation-045-split.zip. The PDF names inside include the page numbers, for example -pages-2-3.pdf.
To divide each page into left and right halves, use Tools › Split › Split Page. It opens the Additional Offline Tools panel with the Split pages into left / right halves operation.
Extract pages
Extract saves selected pages as a new PDF without changing the original document.
- Click Tools › Extract Pages. The Extract Pages panel shows all pages.
- Click the pages you want. Selected pages get a check mark. Use Select all or Clear to select all pages or clear the selection.
- Click the extract button, for example Extract 2 Pages.
The result opens in a new tab with a name ending in -extracted. Pages keep their original order.
Cross Merge for two-sided scans
Cross Merge interleaves pages from several PDFs: page 1 of the first file, page 1 of the second file, then page 2 of the first file, and so on. Use it for two-sided documents scanned in two passes, first all front sides and then all back sides.
- Click Tools › Cross Merge. The Additional Offline Tools panel opens with the Cross Merge (interleave PDFs) operation.
- Under Documents, click Choose Files and select the front-side PDF and the back-side PDF.
- Click Process locally.
- Save the result in the Windows Save dialog. The suggested name is
crossmerge.pdf.
The total file size for one operation in this panel is limited to 50 MB. For larger files, process them in smaller batches.
